City Mouse, Country Mouse

I’m sitting in a modern, oddly-shaped chair on the second floor of the fancy new Harvard University Student Center. The Boyfriend is next to me, tapping away on his laptop, working on one of his novels. It’s gray and rainy and chilly outside; warm and dry and cozy in here. My intention for the day was to drink lots of coffee and do lots of painting, but I’m having trouble tearing my eyes away from the scene on Mass Ave. I'm mesmerized by the traffic, the people, and the holiday-neutral lights in the trees. I’m quite content, sipping on my oat milk latte (pretentious, I know… but SO good!) and watching the world go by… but I’m also feeling guilty about being so unproductive.

We’ve lived in this area for almost ten years. It’s not like I’m not accustomed to all this activity. But I’ll never fully get used to it, or truly feel settled, or be completely comfortable here. My Happy Place is decidedly not the city. I need the woods or the water or - at the very least - buildings that are no more than three stories high. It’s difficult for me to feel creative and inspired in this environment. The Boyfriend, who was born in New York City and raised just outside New Haven, is just the opposite. He calls our current view “kinetic - I love it!” He is getting a lot of writing done this afternoon. I guess I am, too, now that I think of it! I often do my best writing when I am overstimulated… out of sorts… frustrated. My best painting, on the other hand, happens when I am relaxed and happy. The Country Mouse needs her pastoral environment; the City Mouse loves his bright lights and noise and movement.

Are you a “creative type?” When and where do you feel you do your best work?

New Year, New Paint

Happy new year! I have to admit I’m not super sentimental or superstitious about the changing of the calendar, but I am kind of excited to see what 2019 brings. Now that my site and store have been up and running smoothly for a month I am ready to ramp things up. Soon you’ll be seeing more work and more variety in my store. Don’t worry - the snowscapes and starscapes will still be present, in addition to more landscapes, florals, and abstracts. I’ll update my social media outlets each time I add inventory, so stay tuned!

One thing I am super excited about right now is the new set of watercolors I got a few days ago. From the first time I saw a review on YouTube I knew I needed (ok, REALLY wanted) to try Colors of Nature watercolors. Made from all-natural, earth-friendly, non-toxic, vegan ingredients, these paints are very special. The colors are muted and earthy and perfect for painting New England landscapes. I haven’t had much time to play with them this week other than swatching them out but I can’t wait to put them through their paces!

What are you excited about for the coming year? And what would you like to see in my store? Let me know in the comments section!

You can take the girl out of Maine...

I was raised on 140 acres of farmland, fields, and forest in eastern Maine. My brother, cousins, and I built forts out of reclaimed shipping palettes, and furniture from the piles of bricks that never quite made it onto the foundation of our house. We played with the goats and chickens our grandparents kept. We searched for discarded treasures in the century-old rock walls scattered about the property.

A few of the 140 acres…

A few of the 140 acres…

I have always been a “creative type.” From writing and performing in a play with my friends in first grade to working as a television and radio copywriter in my 20s... from picking out tunes on the piano at the age of 4 or 5 to being in every music-related group possible in high school... from weaving heart-shaped paper baskets in elementary school to discovering watercolor in more recent years... I am never happier than when my brain and hands are working together to create something.

My childhood home and environment had a profound effect on who I am now. For the time being I am living just outside New England’s largest city, but my art is almost entirely influenced and inspired by the woods and waters of northern New England. I can never get enough of fall’s golds and oranges, winter’s blues and grays, or spring’s greens and yellow and reds and pinks and purples... if you can name a color that appears in nature, I’ve happily painted with it.

You can take the girl out of Maine, but you’ll NEVER take the Maine out of this girl.
